What we really want kids to know

Each week, I discuss a “word of the week” with my students in class. These words are meant to help kids take the principles of the martial arts out to the world. In other words, it is my hope that kids take these ideas and concepts we discuss with them to school and home. But, as much as I love teaching kicks and punches and as important as self-protection skills are, what we really want kids to know is how to be a good person.

What we really want kids to know…

What do you hope your child learns from you? Which “life lesson” do you think your child will need to become a successful adult? What bit of wisdom do you hope they take that will help them be a good person?

Our “word of the week” segment in each class is specifically designed to teach kids the things they will need to become well-rounded individuals. Some of the topics we discuss are:

  • Courtesy
  • Integrity
  • Respect
  • Self-Control
  • Focus
  • Perseverance

These are some of the things that we (parents and I) hope kids gain from martial arts. And, these are the things that will help kids grow into the adults we hope they will become. What an exciting experience to see these kids build strength in character.
